Another recumbent bike epic across France. There seems to be a theme developing, accidentally, but based on European Bike Express' collection points; the last one was B to B (Beaune to Barcelona), this one is A to A.
Having gone down the east of France and over the Massif Central last year this year I thought I'd explore the westerly area a little more. So, this trip went from Auxerre, followed the Canal du Nivernais to Decize, went west towards Chateauroux and Le Blanc then Poiter, followed La Vienne river skirting Angouleme, Limoge and Perigeux to get to La Reole, finally following the Canal Entre Deux Mers to Toulouse and a bit beyond before returning to Agen for the coach journey home.
About 1,500km in all.
Date of event: 7/5/2010
I saw a few cyclists come up the towpath, cross this bridge, and then continue along that lane opposite while I was gazing into the still waters of the canal. Obviously a popular circular route.
There were few campsites in this area and this was one of the few. It had taken a ride along quite a busy major road followed by a busy minor road to get here. And the only pitch left had no shade, not that it mattered since today was cloudy. But they did have a pool, and they did serve food, though the food was third rate. But the pool was first class and they didn't mind that my swimming trunks were shorts. It was expensive though, instead of the normal 4 to 6€, and the maximum to date of 9.5€, this site was a wopping 21€. So I'd be leaving tomorrow!
Then, damn me, later that afternoon, while getting some water from a stand pipe tap, the tap bit me and gave me a most painful blood blister on my little finger, a definite sign from the gods I should leave.
So, while waiting for my chicken curry and chips I put my Powermonkey on to charge and enjoyed a cold beer, a demi pêche in fact, beer with peach syrup.
While swimming I spotted this dragonfly in the pool, sunk up to its wings. I thought it was dead. However, once I got it out of the water on my finger it moved. Having had a good look at it I tried to encourage it to fly away but it wasn't having any of it. It clung to my finger with surprising force. In the end I managed to coax it onto a leaf on a bush next to the pool, but not before taking photos from every angle.
