My third year of cycling through France, this trip started in Orléans, followed the Loire to Nevers, then switched rivers to follow the Allier, went through the Massif Central, down to the Med and then back inland before going over the Pyrenees and to Roses (pronounced RosAs by the way). 1121km not including 50 or 60 not counted along the way.
The second part of the trip, from the Massif to Spain was largely the route I'd done two years ago and had enjoyed so much. I'd started in Orléans largely because the dates that European Bike Express offered allowed me to arrive in Allègre to coincide with the Human Powered Vehicle Festival (VPH) held there every year.
Date of event: 7/8/2011
I stopped at this mirador to enjoy the view and put on some sun cream since the rain had stopped, for the time being at least.
I met the person whose photo I've included here, Josep Luis, we talked about life, language, age, and the usual stuff that I alway's seem to get into great conversations about. This conversation being in a mixture of French and Spanish from me and Catalan and Spanish from Josep Luis. It was one of life's great conversations, hence the photo to remind me of him.
From here the road got seriously small and even more sinuously curvy, it was taking me west to Maçanet de Cabreny's a small village I'd read about and which I thought would be a nice place to stay for a few day's of rest and repose.
This is the road, not exactly heavy traffic as you can see. If you click on this thumbnail you'll see a larger picture of a little house in the trees, a fixer-upper opportunity that looked very nice.
The hotel, La Cuadra, was fantastic. Very nice rooms, lovely food, extremely friendly people and a pleasant little village. There was a municipal swimming pool but it rained largely for the three day's I was there so I didn't use it.
If you hover over this photo my room, you'll see a blurry photo of a bit of the breakfast buffet table groaning with food. I used to have bread with oil, garlic and tomato (Pa amb tomàquet) with some fuet, ham and blue cheese, followed by fruit then cake and coffee! Included in the price of the room.
This is the view to the left from my bedroom window, click to see a larger picture with the view to the right towards the pyrenees.
If you click to see the larger picture underneath the pine trees you'll see lived two entertaining dogs who were alway's up to something. There was a cat too who used to spend a lot of its day on the chicken wire roof of the aviary, reaching down to try to catch the pigeons who lived there.
