My third year of cycling through France, this trip started in Orléans, followed the Loire to Nevers, then switched rivers to follow the Allier, went through the Massif Central, down to the Med and then back inland before going over the Pyrenees and to Roses (pronounced RosAs by the way). 1121km not including 50 or 60 not counted along the way.
The second part of the trip, from the Massif to Spain was largely the route I'd done two years ago and had enjoyed so much. I'd started in Orléans largely because the dates that European Bike Express offered allowed me to arrive in Allègre to coincide with the Human Powered Vehicle Festival (VPH) held there every year.
Date of event: 7/8/2011
Just down from here was La Galerie, the crêperie breton where I ate, this was next to, or was the Chambres d'hôtes they also own. The owner was a very nice guy, told me a lot about the town and the medieval quarter as he guided me to the house he was renovating where he allowed me to park my bike safely. A half-timbered bike shed. Thus allowing me to skate around on cycling shoes with clips but at least without a bike to push so I could better explore the town.
My only regret is that I should have ordered a bigger one and that, instead of the ppr I drank, I should have had a pitcher of cider.
When I'd finished, about 9ish, I cycled back to the campsite where the reception thrown by the mayor, was still going. Drinks and nibbles. So I joined in, was introduced to the mayor, who it turned out had seem me earlier in the day. Chatted about recumbents, cycling, France, holiday's, and Billom. Met one of the other helpers on the campsite who's name may have been Cherise but since he was a man and that seems more like a woman's name I suspect I got it wrong. Anyway, we all got along famously, helped perhaps by the copious amounts of alcohol we were all consuming. My french was getting better, helped also by the copious amounts... etc. Soon, we were all bezzy mates and swore we'd meet again next year.
Fri 15th July. Billom to Allègre: 91km, avg 11.5km/hr, max 48.8km/hr, 8hrs riding but 7.20am to 6.00pm
The first part of the day was very windy and the wind was largely in my face, a peddle downhill day. It was pretty though, I was starting to get to the Massif Central and the hills were the typical conical shape of that region.
Beauty, well not exactly in this photo, but click on it to see someone's very nice house. Not spectacular but just a nice feel, good blue shutters and the view, which the photo only hints at, was expansive.
