My third year of cycling through France, this trip started in Orléans, followed the Loire to Nevers, then switched rivers to follow the Allier, went through the Massif Central, down to the Med and then back inland before going over the Pyrenees and to Roses (pronounced RosAs by the way). 1121km not including 50 or 60 not counted along the way.
The second part of the trip, from the Massif to Spain was largely the route I'd done two years ago and had enjoyed so much. I'd started in Orléans largely because the dates that European Bike Express offered allowed me to arrive in Allègre to coincide with the Human Powered Vehicle Festival (VPH) held there every year.

You get some notion of the wild nature of the country'side in this photo. If you click to see the larger image you can make out a small village nestled in the hills opposite. When I stop, other than the sound of the wind in the trees it's utterly silent, a dense silence that makes you want to whisper.
At St Marguerite-Lafigère you change sides, swapping the D151 for the D113. After a short rise it's curvy descents again with this low wall protecting you from dropping into the steep sided valley now on the right.
I went for a wander around Les Vans, firstly to take all of my clothes to the launderette. Although I wash what I'm wearing every day I thought it'd be good to wash with powder in a machine rather than with my travel soap and by hand. I also tried to buy another small notebook, I'd actually bought the one that I currently have, almost full now, the last time I was here, two years ago. Unfortunately they didn't have one in the size I wanted.
Les Vans is quite a nice town, a bit touristy but nice for all that. This square had stalls of various sorts out later in the evening and this group of musicians where still playing.
Wed, 20th July. Les Vans to Hippolyte du Fort. 100km, avg 16.7km/hr, max 55km/hr 9hours with 6.20 riding
I couldn't leave too early since the hotel didn't open their reception until 8.00 which I couldn't have the breakfast included in the price nor retrieve my bike which they'd put in their garage. So this photo is timed at 8.54 and is about 15 minutes up the steepish climb out of town.
